Tourists In Our Own Town

Last Saturday saw members and friends of the Geraldton Family History Society becoming tourists in our town. We joined with Diane Evans for a tour of the HMAS Sydney II  Memorial. This site pays homage to the 645 men who lost their lives after the vessel was attacked by the German auxiliary cruiser Kormoran on 19th November 1941. This loss was  the greatest naval loss in Australia  accounting for over a third of the losses sustained in WW II.

Everything in this memorial is symbolic in some way from the layout, design, materials, structures including the plants in the garden. It is only once you understand each of five elements in their entirety can you truly appreciate the sacrifice that these men made for our country.

This Saturday marks the 75th Anniversary of the loss of the HMAS Sydney II. A commemorative service will be held at the HMAS Sydney II Memorial Gummer Ave, Geraldton at 5.00pm

Tours are also conducted daily at 10.30am each day by the Geraldton Voluntary Tour Guides.
