Geraldton FHS visit Rockingham Conference

Newly appointed President Liz Kelly, Vice President Lyn Diepeveen and Treasurer Melody Cartwright  of the Geraldton Family History Society Inc Attended  The Family History Society of Rockingham & Districts Inc. (FHSRD) hosted the 2012 WAGS Affiliated Societies’ Conference from Friday 14th to Sunday 16thSeptember.

The  conference was started off on Friday afternoon Brad Argent from ancestry.com.au spoke at a public lecture in Rockingham on tips for using ancestry more effectively, new releases, and answered questions and brick-bats alike.  Brad Argent spoke of   the great news that the FHSRD Schools Records project data will be online at ancestry.com.au from 15 December.  Brad Argent also mentioned at great length how Ancestry don’t have all the answers and with this suggested to the attendees that they offer support and help to there local family history societies,  by joining them, as without them there would not be the transcriptions and assistance to progress with family history in general.

Thirty people had booked for the Conference Dinner on Friday evening at the Ocean Clipper Inn, where guest speaker Kim Epton presented a talk on the WA Explorers’ Diaries.  Kim is Research Coordinator for a project that will ultimately publish, through Hesperian Press, a great deal of material generated by those brave and intrepid early explorers.

The official part of the conference was held on Saturday 15th September at the Safety Bay Yacht Club with the proceedings opened by Barry Sammels, Mayor of Rockingham.

Laurie Smith, former Mayor of Rockingham, was the Chairman for the meeting, and along with Michelle Shackleton former Secretary of Busselton FHS,  acted as officials for the proceedings, doing an excellent job throughout.

The delegates were told of the plans for Michael Gandy’s visit and Seminar in November

The official part of the Conference was officially closed before noon at which point a group photograph was organised with the ocean as a backdrop.

After official proceedings had finished there was time to be light hearted as there were numerous prizes to be won from the raffles organised, which sent many people rushing to both tickets held and tables to check out the many prizes won.

Later the delegates were treated to the fantastic story telling from Leonie Hayes and Tricia Fairweather, from the State Library, of the tale of the Bride ships in all but name: Miss Monk and the servant girls.  This talk was a wondrous tale and journey of Miss Monk, which was started by Leonie and Tricia  of the State library from a family history enquiry, which gained there interest whilst researching. I thoroughly recommend that if you get the opportunity to hear this talk its well worth it.

The Geraldton Family History Society Inc were impressed by the organisation of the Family History Society of Rockingham & Districts Inc (FHSRD) and the wonderful speakers they gained for the weekend and offer congratulations on a fantastic weekend.
